March 9, Auction Summary

March-9-flier

Hudson Valley Auctioneers, located at 432 Main Street, Beacon, New York will present an unreserved antique and estate auction with absentee, phone and online bidding through Liveauctioneers.com on Monday March 9th at 5:00 PM EST.  In house previews are Sunday March 8th from 1pm-5pm and Monday from 2:00pm-4:30 pm or by appointment beginning 2/28. Items were collected from several estate lots from the Hudson Valley and beyond.

Antique furniture is becoming less of a staple for us as prices continue to reflect changing buying habits. While there are a few fine Empire pieces including a cornucopia carved sofa the balance of the furniture offerings are from the prior mid century and of modern design, some Arts and Crafts including Oscar Bach, French marquetry pieces, some good decorative lots and assorted country. There is a collection of Japanese post Meiji period that features several heavily carved chairs and a large Chinese  marble topped center table. For those with a musical bent there are three pianos; two Steinway and an Erard all in 'art cases' with one of the Steinway's a Model D Style XR Aeolien player. A fine William Lewis and Son viola and  concert Lyon and Healey harp # 3589 will be sure to attract some attention.

Another large selection of various artwork from the same consignor represented in two prior auctions will once again show the taste and diversity of this fine eyed collector. Included will be works by the following artists and led by Whan-Ki Kim, William Bradford, Paul Chikamasa Horiuchi, Joseph Henry Sharp, McClelland Barclay, Wolf Kahn (attrib), William S, Coleman, John Hare, Barbara Stadtlander, William R. Flint, Otto Jones, Frank Stokes, Gerard Belciar and many more. Bronzes from the same collection and an additional Red Hook estate include works by sculptors Mary Ann Owen, Jo Davidson, P.J. Mene, Pautrot, Christopher Fratin, L. Bonheur, J. Chemin, Mark Hopkins, David Lemon, Ramon Parmenter, Ron Lee, Joseph Boulton, R.F Elwell, several Vienna bronzes and others.

Some fine art glass and some pottery include 14 signed Galle cameo vases, a Daum Nancy, 5 L.C. Tiffany pieces, Quezal and Steuben. 2 large Loetz pieces, Murano dragons and two large Consolidated nudes vases, Rookwood, Weller, Pewabic and some copper work.

An impressive flock of 16 large Boehm figural birds and groupings, a large selection of B&G, Volkstedt, Dresden, Meissen, Lenox and other porcelain figures as well as several large French bisque figures will round out an ongoing disbursement of a tremendous lifelong obsession with fine figurines.  Other porcelain and pottery include several fine Mettlach steins and charges, a large Royal Worcester "Engadine" dinnerware service, some fine Chinese porcelain and export china,  Doulton Lambeth, Moorecroft and others.

At this writing this sale has little silver or estate jewelry, however some silver Judaica including Russian examples and 2 heavy cups by Henryk Winograd combine with a cast signed 'Chamber of Secrets" script with documentation, several fine Jay Strongwater pieces, a meerschaum pipe collection,  several estate carpets and a vintage "Minivac 601" will assure a fine and interesting sale.

Plan to preview or view the sale online. Images and listings as well as bidding links for all items are available on our website after 2/27. The gallery is open for payments and pickup Tuesday 9/10 from 10am to 3pm and daily that week 9-3:30. Weekend appointments can be arranged for limited pickups if invoices are prepaid. May 5th, Auction Summary

May-flie_20250501-194053_1

Hudson Valley Auctioneers, located at 432 Main Street, Beacon, New York will present an unreserved antique and estate auction with absentee, phone and online bidding through Liveauctioneers.com on Monday May 5th at 5:00 PM EST.  In house previews are Sunday 5/4  from 1pm-5pm and Monday from  2pm-4:30pm or by appointment beginning 4/28. The sale includes the partial contents of the Estate of Jack McAauliffe, the Estate of Mark Morrison and others.

Mark Morrison began his life as a sculptor while nearing his professional retirement. In the late 1930's and into the 1940's, he, like many of the younger artists in New York City, availed himself to the great many academies, museums, teachers and mentors it offered. He studied with John Flannagan before his death, and then Jose de Creeft and William Zorach at the Art Students League. Having an attraction and aptitude for the ideas of the direct carving movement and good thorough craft, he took advantage of the growing public interest in a new American sculpture, and worked quickly to become a contemporary of his teachers. Through the 1950's he exhibited with them, sold, entered competitions, and won awards and unfortunately died suddenly in October of 1964. The 61 lots in this auction consist of 36 primarily stone sculptures and 23 original photographs of his work by Soichi Sunami acquired from his widow several years ago and now offered in their entirety at this sale.

I first met Jack McAuliffe when I was in my early 20's and operating my first auction company in Cold Spring NY in 1983. A fine, affable man he was among many who helped to guide and educate me in the business of the auction trade. Beyond that he also shared his acumen and appreciation for the fine art that he purchased from me on occasion and later as my business grew became an occasional consignor. His remaining stock and personal collection and possessions are now offered in this sale and include many fine paintings, multiples and period frames, several bronzes and quality 19th century smalls among them an original plaster maquette by Daniel Chester French.  .

Other estates provided Mid Century furniture, bedroom and dining pieces in teak as well including a Bruno Mathsson lounge. Estate jewelry in gold and silver set with various stones will be plentiful as well as a large selection of sterling hollowware and flatware. A small selection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain, artwork and an exceptional rosewood carved dragon chair will begin the general sale. Expect offerings of Tiffany, Steuben, Lalique, fine china and glass, a small collection diecast and other toys and a varied but interesting group of estate furniture from country to high style.

Plan to preview or view the sale online. Images and listings as well as bidding links for all items are available on our website. Gallery is open for payments and pickup Tuesday 5/6 from 10am to 3pm and daily that week 9-3:30. Weekend pick up appointments can be arranged for limited pickups if invoices are prepaid. All shipping is by third party vendors only. Auction Summary, March 3rd, Estate of Larry Wiseman with Additions.

March-3rd-bee-flier

Hudson Valley Auctioneers, located at 432 Main Street, Beacon, New York will present an unreserved antique and estate auction with absentee, phone and online bidding through Liveauctioneers.com on Monday March 3rd at an early start of 3:00 PM EST. In house previews are Sunday March 2nd from 1pm-5pm and Monday from 12-2:30 pm or by appointment beginning 2/24. Auction features the remaining contents of the Estate of Larry Wiseman, Sparkill NY with select additions.

Those of us fortunate to have spent and still spend our respective lives in this thoroughly engrossing and occasionally maddening trade share many similar experiences. Aside from all the endless stories of triumph and tragedy there is one constant; the meeting of the same and seemingly ever changing group of unique personalities that frequent the shows, markets, shops and auctions.

Very early in my first auctions in Cold Spring I met Larry Wiseman. He was already well established and known as "The Renaissance Man". At the time I had sold him a cast stone WPA sculpture and after buying it he exuberantly told me what a fantastic purchase he had made and frankly how much of a bargain he had gotten. He remained a client and one of those "personalities" in and out of my life for the next 45 years.

I hadn't known he'd passed two years ago. He had still been buying the occasional auction lot that I had personally delivered to his slowly decaying Victorian mansion in Sparkill at his insistence. He never let me inside. And now, as I offer for sale what remains in his house and grounds, I've gotten to know better the fascinating fellow he was. His numerous interests are represented by the variety of items in this upcoming auction.

For example Larry's lifelong affection for Venice, Italy was evident by a collection of gondola oar locks; one by Giuseppe Carli, several paintings, Murano glass, cameo shells, Italian Provincial furniture and Renaissance decorative items.

He was enamored with cowboys and the American West. Several reproduction Remmington bronzes, two large cowboy themed canvas murals, various skulls, a fine tooled saddle, tooled belts, two F.V. Guinzburg terracotta exhibition sculptures of Mexican women and a very large cast set antler styled rustic furniture are evidence. Religious objects include a very early carved Christian triptych, early gilt carved station, a 17th century Bible with leather binding, an early icon, several statues and other artworks.

Victoriana was another interest as a pair of cast iron figural boys, an exceptional pair leaded windows, a Herter quality standing desk, carved marble and alabaster statues and spelter statues will be offered. And then there are the oddities; a stuffed dog in a shadowbox , a stuffed monkey, a taxidermy horse head, a Concetta Scaravaglione WPA statue of an Island drummer, ethnographic carvings and from Doyle's NY 1986 auction of Rock Hudson's personal items a Stroud player piano with trompe l'oeil decoration, Hudson's collection of piano rolls and the original auction catalog and receipt.

Sadly we lost another longtime client this year, Arthur Gordon of Tarrytown NY. A former educator show and shop dealer we had been working closely with Arthur and his wife Michelle over the past few years to disperse their multiple overstuffed storage units. Mr Selnick began his working career in a contractor’s office, after a year there he spent the next 8 years with an architectural-engineering firm, where he rose to the position of chief structural engineer.

In his long and distinguished career Mr. Selnick was a consultant for an extremely diversified array of structures including hospitals, hotels, industrial use buildings, cargo buildings, airports, theaters, schools, libraries, museums, shopping malls & stores.

His interests extended to woodworking and had built two large workshops in his Hillsdale NY home and showroom.

His particular interest was in turning bowls and creating useful objects for his family and friends.

Mr. Selnick’s interests in collecting folk art began after meeting Phyliss Solomon in the late 1960’s, they shared an appreciation for the arts and Phyllis began acquiring American portraiture.

She had become a volunteer at the American Folk Art Museum in NYC and her enthusiasm spurred Alfred’s serious pursuit of objects that spoke to the connection every collector shares with their personal passion

Their home and separate gallery on a mountainside in Hillsdale, designed by Alfred were perfectly suited to display both of the collections.

The auction has combined both collections for this public offering with a cataloged sale of artwork, folk art and signage, followed by an uncatalogued session of various other items, all to be offered in person, and on liveauctioneers.com.

October 9th: The Art of Artist, Musician and Activist Marzette Watts

050-1

Hudson Valley Auctioneers will offer 150 lots for auction including oils, watercolors and ink on paper by Artist and Activist Marzette Watts on October 9th, Columbus Day at 7PM.

After the sit-in at the lunch counter at the Montgomery, Alabama courthouse in 1960, Marzette Watts and eight others were expelled from Alabama State College. Enduring intimidation from the police and the Ku Klux Klan, Marzette, a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, left Alabama and enrolled at NYU in New York City. Having been an art major at ASC, he continued his studies in the department where famed Amistad muralist Hale Woodruff was teaching. He later spent a year at the Sorbonne.

Settling into 27 Cooper Square in Manhattan, Marzette became part of a vibrant community which included Le Roi Jones, Allen Ginsberg, Larry Rivers, and Free Jazz musician, Archie Schepp. The activism of the Free Jazz movement shifted Marzette’s genius from painting to music.

He became a close friend of Lawrence Weiner with whom he worked on soundtracks. Later, he formed his own recording companies and eventually taught at Wesleyan.

There will also be photographs and a rare Delancey Street Museum flyer featuring a Bob Thompson exhibit. This will be an in person as well as liveauctioneers event.
