Hudson Valley Auctioneers will offer 150 lots for auction including oils, watercolors and ink on paper by Artist and Activist Marzette Watts on October 9th, Columbus Day at 7PM.                                                                                                                    

After the sit-in at the lunch counter at the Montgomery, Alabama courthouse in 1960, Marzette Watts and eight others were expelled from Alabama State College. Enduring intimidation from the police and the Ku Klux Klan, Marzette, a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, left Alabama and enrolled at NYU in New York City. Having been an art major at ASC, he continued his studies in the department where famed Amistad muralist Hale Woodruff was teaching. He later spent a year at the Sorbonne.

Settling into 27 Cooper Square in Manhattan, Marzette became part of a vibrant community which included Le Roi Jones, Allen Ginsberg, Larry Rivers, and Free Jazz musician, Archie Schepp. The activism of the Free Jazz movement shifted Marzette’s genius from painting to music.

He became a close friend of Lawrence Weiner with whom he worked on soundtracks. Later, he formed his own recording companies and eventually taught at Wesleyan. 

There will also be photographs and a rare Delancey Street Museum flyer featuring a Bob Thompson exhibit. This will be an in person as well as liveauctioneers event.

Mid Century highlights in furniture from a Scarsdale estate include several Paul Evans pieces, an  Edward Wormley for Dunbar table, Nelson for Herman Miller dressers and chairs, two wall units, one in rosewood,  H. Probber steel based table, Milo Baughman sofa set and many other pieces. Several Ernest Shaw iron sculptures,  a Ron Kent wooden bowl,  Galle cabinet vases, Curtis Jere sculptures, Elsa Paretti, Kosta Boda and other MCM items mix in with a strong selection of 19th century Grand Tour bronzes, L.C. Tiffany lighting and bronze accessories, an exceptional Japanesque French bronze and marble clock set, a selection of vintage musical instruments, many various clocks and a selection of 19th century lighting. Mention should be made of a single lot of several thousand baseball and sports cards in excellent condition unsorted and ungraded, a rare early Pepsi machine, 2 unusual stick phones, a Gargoyle enamel standing sign and can, an early Standard Oil galvanized tub, four Singer Featherweight machines, an All Star Comet slot machine and a exceptionally rare Meek and Sons Model 44 trout reel in excellent condition.

Sets of fine china by makers Royal Crown Derby, Lenox, Meissen, Limoges, Wedgewood will be sold as well as an extensive collection Mary Greogory enamel glassware sold in lots, a large single lot of cranberry glass, an exceptional epergne, a large lot of Victorian silverplate items, a shaving mug collection, a large section costume and fine jewelry and several hundred ounces sterling holloware and flatware sets are other examples of the diversity of the auction.                                                                                                      

Several paintings are led by a large nude by Robert Brackman, a large old master probably Spanish Colonial, a fine W.P. Stubbs oil of the Yacht Frank M. Mcgear, and other works by artists A.V. Hollingsworth, William Lester Stevens (attrib), C.H.H Burleigh, William Mulready, B.H. De Hoog, Peter Max and others.  Good garden including Victorian cast iron urns and a dog headed bench, some wicker, lots of barrister bookcases, good country, French bronze mounted pieces, brass inlaid India rosewood pieces, a fine pair of brass inlaid 19th century game tables, a carved Horner cheval mirror, lots of Baker and other quality 20th century pieces are scattered throughout.

Among the Asian items are another offering of 12 Chinese archer's rings from the same remarkable collection we have been selling for two years, several porcelain pieces, several woodblocks by Shiko Munakata, a large Japanese bronze elephant group, a China Trade gouache of the Hongs at Canton ca. 1835 and among other pieces a perhaps historically significant collection of photo postal cards and two large albums of fascinating photographs taken by Clarence Wilson of Middletown NY circa 1900 in his travels to rural China and Japan with descriptions of various scenes of village and artisan life.

Discovered in a local Cornwall NY warehouse, from a company that used to decorate Broadway plays, a gigantic collection of Christmas items including but no limited to artificial trees, lighting, glass, composite ornaments, figures, Santa figures, candy canes, Nut crackers, cases of holly, ribbons, various faux fruits, too much to list, many items still in bins.

Huge book collection, excellent assortment of estate found books, including art, Science Fiction, Comics, Auction catalogs, decorative arts, modern design & architecture & much more.

A large selection of Jazz, Rock, Pop & Christmas related music CD's, at least 6 bins filled.

Hudson Valley Auctioneers, located at 432 Main Street, Beacon, New York will present an unreserved antique and estate auction with absentee, phone and online bidding through Liveauctioneers.com on Monday June 5th at an early start of 3:00 PM EST.  In house previews are Sunday 6/4 from 1pm-5pm and Monday from 12 noon- 2:30pm or by appointment beginning 5/29. The sale includes several estates and partial estates. The most interesting of which was located in a large camp property on Oscawana Lake in Putnam County, NY. Scattered throughout several buildings on the property were paintings and personal effects of Louis Elshemius and his father Gustavius. Paintings and artworks from both men and Cecil Roberts are included in the sale along with furniture and effects of an early 20th century lake property. Coincidentally,  a large offering of country pine furniture, some in paint,  from a former dealer's home nearby include several cupboards, various collections of smalls, crock, baskets and Staffordshire figurines.                                                                                               

Mid Century furniture from a Scarsdale estate features a fine selection by Edward Wormley for Dunbar; dining table, chairs and sideboard, two dressers, two end tables and a rare surfboard table. The bedroom had a Herman Miller king bed, fine Tommi Parzinger gilt mirror,  Murano lamps, Gio Ponti style table and benches. Several Camer chandeliers, Aldo Tura smoke set and a Milton Hebald plaster maquette are other MCM highlights. Good garden, mostly from Ridgefield and White Plains estates, include Woodard, Salterini iron, many sets of Victorian cast iron urns, wire and zinc pieces.  Several sets of fine china; Royal Crown Derby, Lenox, Meissen, Limoges, Consolidated Glass Nymphs, stemware sets including Waterford, Rogaska, a large studio pottery collection and a Lalique “Camarque" vase and Pinsons bowl. 

Several paintings by Francis William Edmonds including the fanciful  "Gil Blas and the Archbishop '' recently on loan to a Florida museum lead a large number of artists, notably  A.T. Bricher, Horace Hoope, J. Mellor, Edmond Louyot, James Cook McKell, Andre Boyer, Martin Friedman, W.F, DeHaas, Lars, Stenberg and others.  Victorian wicker, several pieces of Stickley mission oak, lots of 19th brown furniture, French bronze mounted pieces are some other furniture offerings.

Several large lots of costume jewelry, Native American silver and a large selection of fine jewelry and watches will be sold along with a considerable amount of sterling flatware and hollowware as well as a large Cornwall NY estate collection of US coins, mostly silver and sold in large lots.

A fine selection of 19th century bronze decorative items, various chandeliers and sconces are scattered throughout the sale. Artists include Carrier Belleuse, Leon Noel Delagrange, Sterett-Gittings Kelsey and Curtis Jere.  Among the Asian items are jade archer's rings, several  porcelain pieces, watercolors and other artifacts. The sale includes several estates and partial estates, primarily the estates of Alvin Mann, Billy Joe Padgett and Cusie Pfeifer. Several partial estates contributed as well as a packed Connecticut hay barn of a longtime dealer and collector.  

Furniture plays a major role in this sale, much more than in recent sales. A large offering of country pine furniture, some in paint, came from a former dealer's home in Putnam Valley NY.  Several cupboards, dry sinks, sets of chairs, corner cabinets, a good tiger maple chest on chest, various collections of smalls, crock, baskets, a pair of early portraits, Staffordshire figurines and other good lots are scattered throughout the sale.  In addition to the American country, the barn in Ridgefield had a number of 19th French and English pieces in dusty but fairly good condition. 

Other furniture of note is an assembled  9 pieces Horner style dining room, a three piece hickory rustic parlor set and table and some Victorian wicker and several pieces 17th century ex collection Nicola D'Ascenzo.  Several large lots of costume jewelry, Native American and some fine jewelry and watches including a large 18kt Tiffany and Company diamond and pearl brooch will be sold along with a considerable amount of sterling flatware and hollowware.

Among the Asian items is a beautifully carved and lacquered Japanese cabinet, several carved Chinese marble top tables, porcelains, watercolors and other staples. Many items in the sale were purchased from NYC galleries in the early 1980's.

18th, 19th and 20th century furniture are diverse in a selection of barristers and file cabinets to American country, a rare Thonet recliner, a Gustav Stickley rocker, MCM teak furniture, and bedroom and dining room furniture. Silver and jewels include a few hundred ounces sterling flatware and hollowware, several gold bracelets and a continuation of the large estate collection of fine Native American silver and turquoise pieces including Old Pawn. 

A large selection of US commemorative gold and fine silver coins are also offered, most in large lots. 

Several china sets, Persian carpets, vintage beaded and designer handbags, decorated stoneware, duck decoys including several by both Stanley Cichowsky and Bob Jones, Charles Birdsall, Keith Mueller and others, an extensive collection of vintage Steiff teddy bears and animals, vintage dolls and various other country lots blend throughout the sale. Doll maker Jane Cather created the remarkable 'Class of 86' group of hand made cloth dolls that will be sold as one lot.

Traditionally one of our best sales of the year this particular auction offers 500 lots of traditional antiques, lots of silver and jewelry and "treasure and trash" from several estates, the sale begins with the last offering of paintings by Americo DiFranza followed Asian items highlighted by another 12 Chinese archers rings from the dwindling collection we've been dispersing for several years. 

Other carved jades, porcelains, bronzes, a rare Japanese meiji rain garment and some rosewood furniture follow.  Artists represented in the sale include A.C. Hollingsworth, Dickens Chang, Robert Byerley, Otto Bierhals, A. Witkowski, Ben Kamihira, Edward C. Leavitt, Charles Linford, Robert Ward Von Boskerk, T.S. Fribee, Hendrik Livens, Henry Miller, James Tytler and others. 

Many of the early paintings came primarily from a former Pound Ridge dealers estate and a very interesting Brewster NY estate of a gentleman. That estate offerings included some excellent 18th century carvings, lighting and a Dutch 16th century oil on panel depicting John the Baptist. An early Dutch oil, probably 17th century of two ships in distress, walked into the gallery from a local home.            

Early furniture including an excellent 17th or 18th century vargueno, an excellent burl maple Beidermeier dining set, lots of French Provincial including a complete carved antique panettiere, a bone inlaid Italian ebonized table and a large selection of American and Continental "brown furniture" plays throughout the day. 

American highlights include a period Phyffe attributed marble topped dressing table, A Boston box sofa, A Meeks style Gothic Revival bookcase secretary, a Horner style faux bamboo ladies desk, an Allison attributed drop leaf, a fine ebonized cerule armchair and another ebonized piece , an attributed Associated Artist work similar to a Vanderbilt interior example.  

Numerous 19th century mirrors, great country smalls, an impressive selection of old Meissen, an excellent pair of Gien Marois chargers, a large selection of other glass, bronze, clocks, antique maps, French posters, fine prints, ethnographic items, Daum and much more!  

An excellent sponge painted blanket box, a fine French marble top secretary, a matched pair of period brass inlaid rosewood game tables and strong tiger maple Eldred Wheeler secretary are a few other highlights. 

Mid Century items include a chandelier by Gaetano Sciolani and another Poul Henningson for Poulson, a large Paul Frankl bamboo set, two Aeron office chairs, a Frank Doerner lounge and ottoman, a Katavolos steel and leather chair and lots of teak among other pieces.   

Several hundred ounces of sterling silver flatware and hollowware, a large selection Native American and old pawn silver and turquoise jewelry and an excellent selection of fine jewelry from several estates is all unreserved. A selection of estate carpets including scatters and room sized, some good garden including antique cast and wrought iron and cast stone, a large pilot house eagle, a matched pair of 133 drawer steel cabinets from and the old Sing Sing prison and even a 19th century buckboard in excellent condition should cause a little excitement.

This sale begins with 20 paintings by Americo DiFranza from the estate collection of the artist. DiFranza, a career graphic designer and a master with pastel, later in life instructed at The Art Students League. 

From a large Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn estate comes several fine paintings, several exceptional French style salon sofas and chairs, an outstanding bronze mounted secretaire abattant, fine bronzes and Chinese and Japanese items. Chinese includes several rosewood marble top tables, many pieces of excellent porcelain including plaques, a pair of military rank badges, jades and a carved polychrome Buddha. Exceptional pieces of Satsuma pottery, watercolors and woodblocks were also part of the collection.    

Bronzes include a large Picault L'escholier, a large Barbedienne Roman man, two by Hazel Brill Jackson, a meerkat and a Roman on horseback and a modern five part burnished bronze series by Aharon Bezalel among others. The art from Brooklyn and other estates feature a signed Jasper Johns litho coat hanger, 1960; oils by J Machard, C. Jacque, W. Perry, Dutzschold, F.L. Martin, L. Burger, G. Kraus, Vestie Davis, F. Gommes, Clyde Wood, Harry Gottleib and two by Chaim Goldberg among others. 18th, 19th and 20th century furniture examples are scattered throughout the sale and include some excellent several oak pieces, a Harvard 19th century dental cabinet, several glass front cabinets, a large gilt pier mirror,  Mid Century examples; six Eames Eiffel Tower chairs, a Paul McCobb cabinet, eight Steelcase chairs, a Joe Columbo utility cart, Eames office chair,  a pair of BBB Sissi Italian leather chairs, a pair of chrome and black Barcelonas and a Geiger Brickel sofa. 

Mid Century garden includes a Woodard set, six chairs and a table with a matching sofa. Other garden features a 3/4 life size 18th? century carved limestone classical girl, signed with some damage, Victorian iron urns, a wrought iron dining table and a cast stone standing griffin and sundial.

Several china services; Lenox 'Columbia", Wedgwood 'Florentine", Haviland Limoges 'Cathay' , five cast glass Daum autos, a tremendous offering Waterford glass and various other fine porcelains and glass from various estates. This sale begins with 20 paintings by Americo DiFranza, a first offering from the estate collection of the artist. DiFranza, a career graphic designer and a master with pastel, later in life instructed at The Art Students League and was past president. This initial offering will be followed in subsequent sales with approximately 40 more pieces. The remainder of the sale is primarily from two old money NYC estates, the Estate of Dennis Lo and several other partial estates.

A fascinating story if true regards an English traveling medical cabinet from an old Hasting on Hudson estate purportedly owned by Dr. Samuel Mudd. Old labeled Baltimore bottles lead a bit of credence but aside from urban legend there is no proof.

The day's bidding starts with the two collections of vintage advertising items, one a long time accumulation of clocks, signage, paperweights and display items. The other is an archival group saved from a local Putnam County historic business, Forson Bros. general store, located in the center of what is now the hamlet of Garrison New York.

The store opened in the 1880's in what was originally called Forsonville. Included in the offering of advertising items is a large lot of day books, purchase and sales receipts and the traveling stage makeup kit along with three vintage photos of  "America's Tattooed Lady" , Annie Howard. How it ended up in this trove is unknown.

A retiring antiques dealer and collector's home in Brewster, Cape Cod added a large selection of 19th century furniture and decorative accessories to the 625 lot auction. Chests, tables, sets of chairs, Japanese and Chinese porcelains, Japanese woodblocks, glassware and many interesting bits and lots of treasure. Hudson Valley Auctioneers, located at 432 Main Street, Beacon, New York will present an unreserved absentee, phone bid and online antique and estate auction through Liveauctioneers.com on Monday June 14th at an early start of 3:00 PM EST. 

A gallery preview will be held Sunday 6/13 from 1-5 and Monday day of sale beginning at 12 noon and ending at 2:30pm or by appointment, several interesting estates and collections have combined to offer an interesting and diverse sale of 600 lots.

The sale begins with a one owner collection of sextants, microscopes, barometers, scientific instruments, several antique maps and various other oddities. Record players include a rare Berliner gramophone along with a rarer original record cabinet with original records. Several clocks are included in both sessions including an antique tall clock, carriage clocks, several Atmos, regulators, French figural bronze and gilt spelter and other various examples. Thirteen vintage coin op gumball machines were collected in the 1970'sat various flea markets and tag sales and are in working condition. Also assembled in the 1970's and 80's is a one owner 50 lot collection of archaic and dynastic Chinese and Anglo Roman glazed and unglazed pottery artifacts primarily purchased from London dealers by an Anglophile best selling author. Chinese, Japanese and other Asian pottery and artworks from the several other estates offered are scattered throughout the sale. 

Artworks offerings are led by artists Henry Gasser, F.T. Sibley, Aaron Shattuck, Leon Devos, J. Francis Cropsey, G.S. Vander Poel, William Glackens, Frank Auerbach and four Paul Jacoulet woodblocks.  Art pottery, blown art glass, Art Deco figurals and decorative items from many periods come from a New Jersey collection. 

Mid Century items include two sets of eight BRNO chairs for Knoll, a Carlo Scarpa dining and coffee table in the Doge line, Brueton cantilever coffee table and glass objects by Charlie Miner, Brad Copping, Louis Via and Donald Robertson.  A fine selection of English and American mahogany and walnut pieces from the last three centuries are scattered throughout. Some good country and garden items including some pieces from the Glenmere Mansion include cast iron, teak, cast stone and carved stone. A large selection of estate carpets, a collection of early fraternal robes and fur coats should yield some surprises.                 

Not much jewelry in this months' auction but more than 1000 troy ounces of silver in flatware and hollowware will be sold.  Folk items from a large Westport estate will garner some attention; two large polychrome carved wooden plaques depicting scenes of Baron Von Munchausen's antics, a fine folksy hobby horse, a gilt horse weather vane, a sailor whirligig, two wallpaper hat boxes, a blue painted dome trunk 1841, a fine half hull and a small Prior school portrait of a child.      

Bronzes are highlighted by an Albert Carrier Belleuse figure of Rembrandt, J. Smith 1901 figure of Napoleon on a marble plinth, Austrian cold painted Art Deco dancer and several examples of 17th and 18th century Flemish and Chinese cauldrons and pots. The sale begins with 200 lots of sculpture, paintings and drawings from a newly rediscovered "Outsider" artist of remarkable talent. Louise Abrams born in 1941 studied in New York at the Art Students League, the New School and in Mexico at the Instituto Allende.She received her BA and has graduate work in the Fine Arts Department at CUNY. She had several gallery shows in the mid 1970's including Cloud Gallery June 1975, Auction 393 submissions in June 1975 and Pleiades Gallery exclusive show September 1975. Her work has been described as "a microscopic view of life", "Native American, Aboriginal, Olmec inspired'' and "visionary".  Abrams' work and study has been interrupted throughout her life with severe mental and emotional challenges and has spent significant periods of her life in various institutions. A number of  themes, possibly visions, dominate the few thousand works comprising the total of Abrams’ work from the 1970’s to the early 2000’s all of which is court ordered to be sold by Hudson Valley Auctioneers. This May sale will be the fourth of several offerings to liquidate the entire block of work from sculpture in stone, ink drawings, oils on board and canvas and numerous sketch pads. The gallery anticipates one further sale. Price results have already accelerated since the initial offering in November 2020.

A gallery preview will be held Sunday 3/28 from 1-5 and Monday beginning at 2pm and ending at 4:30. The  unreserved 400 lot sale combines items from several local estates and collections including the New York apartment of former Michigan State Senator Jack Faxon, furniture from the estate of former antiques dealer Joan White, Monroe NY and a Poughkeepsie NY antiquarian and dealer as well as gallery and other additions.

The Faxon estate offered up an excellent collection Persian and other carpets, several lots of antique leaded and beveled glass as well as several interesting pieces of architectural iron artifacts and period brutalist sculpture. Lots of good 19th century country and period furniture is well represented with a tiger maple slant desk, a tall cherry chest of drawers and a rare set of six early 19th century chairs from the White estate. Artwork scattered through the evening includes several fine lithos including two  Rene Magritte portfolios and T. Benton among others as well as artworks by Althea Platt, Arnold Plancer, Harry Stoner, Chester B. Price and A. Leydenfrost to name a few.

A collection of studio pottery mainly from the estate of Herbert Sargeant includes several groups of his pieces as well as works by Marion Vlosky, Warren Mackenzie, Kylikki Salmanharra, Bethel Pike, and others. A final wrap up of the Westchester estate that has been featured in the last several sales provided a nice selection of period Art Deco furniture, a classic Noguchi coffee table,  a pair of Selig Milo Baughman chairs and several other lots from the middle of last century.

Items from a former Poughkeepsie retired book dealer include several early machines; roller organs, traveling victrolas, early maps and books, Asian items such as a fine bronze Budhha, Japanese mixed metal, porcelains and textiles.

Session two features 400 fresh estate lots primarily from a long held storage unit owned by an AP journalist who lived and worked in China in the early 1980's and subsequently in other stations. 

There is a large selection of porcelain vases, furniture and other decorative and antique items. African items include wood carvings, bronzes and fabrics and there is a selection of Indian and Middle Eastern items. 

Cultural items include a signed copy of Quaddafi's political treatise and a group of Chinese post Mao era items. 

A Valley Cottage estate consigned a group of religious carvings including a wooden carved life size holy family group, several carvings of saints and Greek and Russian icons and other paintings.  

A visit to Long Island's north shore filled a truck with fancy oak carved furniture, a rare oak dental cabinet, a heavily carved rocker and an impressive Pottier and Stymus ebonized credenza. 

Country furnishings include several cupboards and decorative accessories mixed in with Victorian garden cast iron urns, benches and a fine lead figural fountain with a classical iron base. 

Fancy goods from two Scarsdale estates feature several pounds of fancy sterling, table goods by Royal Worcester, Royal Crown Derby, chintz, Herend, Royal Copenhagen, Waterford, Lalique as well as a large set of India stoneware with a dragonfly motif. 

Artists represented in the sale from the 19th century include Horace Hooper, Jules Cornilliet, Richard Winternitz, E.M. Gray, Guiseppe Aureli and some unknown folk artists and an excellent three panel screen attributed to the Bloomsbury Group school of art. 

20th century artists are Yaaco Agam, Frank Stella, Frederick Prescott, Fanny Holtzman, Herbert Pullinger, B. Weener, Jean de Botton, Antonio Barrera and B. Forster among many others.
