Hudson Valley Auctioneers' March sale is scheduled for the 12th at 5:00 and is an unreserved two session multi estate auction in the 432 Main
Having lost his rent controlled penthouse in lower Manhattan our client sorted through the 40 years of accumulated religious artifacts and folk art from his travels in South and Central America as well as family treasures from his wife's northern India heritage, the result is approximately 200 lots of varied and interesting items such as carved stone and bronze Buddhas, several lots of Indian bronzes, profusely carved rosewood furniture, several early eglomise portraits, a fine gilt Japanese table shrine and other Asian treasures, all manor of retalbos, santos, Day of the Dead and other pieces some by artists Frank Brita, Maria Romero Cash and Anita Romero Jones.
Additionally 13 oils by Samuel Rothbort who emigrated from Russia in 1904 at the age of 22 to New York and had a long painting career with many gallery representations. The works include Brooklyn street scene, skating scene, 6 florals, a rabbi in a hand carved frame and a self portrait. His son Lawrence, also a successful and innovative painter, tragically killed in 1964, is represented with several works in the auction.
An Ossining NY estate yielded several paintings, 2 Coulton Waugh's, a fine portrait by Christina Morton and an exceptional early old master style Madonna and child. Digging through the jammed packed apartment was tedious but rewarding as 30 lots of fine estate jewelry were eventual discovered stashed in unlikely places including gold, pearls, Tiffany silver, rings and a finely carved stone cameo in gold and diamond frame. Vintage luggage, handbags, Hermes scarves and mid century modern furniture and decorative accessories were also to be had, Dunbar, Woodard, Fortuny, Danish and other makers with be offered.
Eight Darrel Greene pulp illustrations and 3 full life sketch books, three New Orleans scenes by Larry Edwardson, a Franz Bueb 1953 watercolor are highlights of the many additional artworks in the sale.
For fans of John Steinbeck an interesting folder of material was discovered in another consignment. Several documents including the publishers contracts with Elaine Steinbeck and Robert Wallsten pertaining to the publication of "Steinbeck A Life in Letters" as well as two original letters from Steinbeck, one written from the AJC Ranch in 1957 and another signed "the dark lady of East 72nd street".
Another historically interesting item is a large framed replica 1812 flag that was presented to the descendants of Francis Scott Key at the official launch in Groton Ct. April 22nd 1966 of the Polaris submarine with the same name.
Other highlights in the online session include 8 Biedermeier case pieces, a mahogany Steinway model M grand, 2 fruitwood French armoirs, lots of silver, 2 French deco figural bronzes, and another four lots of First Edition Club unread volumes. Equipment includes a Cub Cadet double deck commercial Tank M60 mower and a Yamaha Kodiak 450 4x4 ATV with plow and winch.
Session Two immediately follows immediately and will have 250 additional lots to be sold by in house, absentee and phone bidding only.
Lots of furniture and Mid Century including an inlaid French style marble top bedroom, various rugs and carpets, lots more silver and jewels, several lots Illene Dana artwork, vintage clothes and the complete contents of an 81st street apartment.
